Air Lockers vs centre diff lock
Dear ARB,
I have recently taken my family Toyota LandCruiser 80 Series on a 4WD track with my wife and children. I wanted to test the capabilities before I take them Outback onto more demanding terrain. The vehicle responded really well on the steep, uneven, broken stone terrain; however I have a query about the different types of diff lock.
In my vehicle, the diff lock automatically comes in when in low ratio, and a push button for high ratio. I don’t believe that this gives me individual traction on the four wheels. Could you please explain the difference between diff locks (as above) and the ARB Air Lockers?
Kind regards,
Manuel Pace and family
Dear Manuel and family,
The ‘diff lock’ you are referring to is not an axle differential lock like an ARB Air Locker, but rather what is correctly referred to as a ‘centre diff lock’. It is a very common misconception that they are the same thing, when in fact they are quite different in function and benefit.
The centre diff lock you have serves a similar purpose to ARB’s Air Locker except that a centre diff is there to ensure equal traction between your front and rear axles only. All traction losses from side to side (from left to right wheel across the same axle) are not accounted for at all by a centre diff lock until you add an Air Locker to one (or both) of your axles.
Note: A centre diff is not even included on most part-time 4WD vehicles (i.e. vehicles with manual front hubs) and therefore their centre is always locked.
The diagram on the right may help clarify this.
Here are a few examples:
Hopefully my reply has clarified the difference between centre diff locks and axle diff locks like ARB’s Air Locker. You should also be aware that because the locations of the centre diff lock and Air Locker axle diff locks are totally different, you are always able to add an axle diff lock (or two) onto your axles to work together with your centre diff lock, to get the maximum grip available to your vehicle.

Front or rear?
Dear ARB,
I was wondering what is the best option for an ARB diff lock if I was only going to get one front or rear? I do most of my driving in bush and have had cross axle traction problems so I was hoping a diff lock would solve a bit of my problems.
Regards,
Geoff
Geoff,
Unfortunately the question of front vs rear is always going to come down to operator opinion. It is a subject that has been heatedly argued around campfires for decades.
ARB does not specifically recommend one axle over another for your first Air Locker, as even our own staff do not all share the same preference. What we can offer you though, are a few good points to consider when making your own choice:
Consider these points carefully when choosing. Different vehicles and the preference given by their drivers are always going to have an effect on the final conclusion. What we can definitely conclude is that having an Air Locker fitted to both axles would offer you the best of all the situations above, and the maximum amount of off road traction that is physically possible to get from your vehicle.

Old vs new
I have one of your air compressors which I purchased about ten years ago. It’s mounted under the bonnet of my 4×4, and is regularly used to inflate the tyres on my vehicle, plus invariably it gets used to pump up all my mates’ tyres as well. It’s taken a real hiding over the years, but has never let me down. However, I noticed in previous editions of your magazine that you now have a new unit available which is twice as fast as mine.
Furthermore, I’ve just been reading the December issue of 4×4 Australia magazine and saw that your new compressor comfortably beat everything else on the market. I think it’s awesome that a genuine Aussie designed and built product can beat all the imported brands, and despite the fact there’s nothing wrong with my old compressor, I’m keen to upgrade to the new model. My question is, does the new compressor share the same mounting footprint as the old model, and are changes necessary to the wiring loom?
Regards,
Jeff McMahon
Hi Jeff,
The mounting holes and the power connections of the new CKMA12 air compressor are all identical to those used on the previous RDCKA model.
This suggests that a CKMA12 model can be installed or retrofitted by simply bolting the new compressor in where the RDCKA was, and plugging it into the existing wiring connections. This is an acceptable practice, and the new compressor was intentionally designed to be able to be used as an RDCKA replacement should one be required.
Please note however, that the loom which is supplied with the new CKMA12 model was redesigned to include:
For a replacement compressor the supply voltage should not be an issue. However, to gain the full benefits of the high flow output that is specified for the new CKMA12 models, the old loom needs to be replaced with the one that comes with the new compressor (i.e. for the lowered supply resistance).
If you are doing this then please note that only the power supply portion of the loom needs to be replaced. The short section of loom from the switches to the firewall plug does not need to be changed to gain full performance in an existing installation.
If you book your vehicle into one of our stores, this work can generally be undertaken in two to three hours, depending on the vehicle.

Can I purchase or reserve an item before May 2?
No. To be fair to everybody attending on the day, we are unable to sell or put sale items on hold prior to May 2. Items will be sold on a first come, first served basis on the day.
Can items purchased at the Garage Sale be fitted?
No. Fitting is not available on items purchased at the Garage Sale and all items must be taken on the day.
Can I leave my panel out in the weather?
Both Redarc thin film and rigid type panels are protected against the elements and will be fine if left out in the weather. Redarc solar panels are tested to handle rain and hail. The portable panels can also be tied or pegged down so as not to lose them in windy conditions. Generally though, when the weather is stormy, rainy or there is hail about, sunlight levels are not high enough to generate power from your solar panels. Therefore, if possible, it would be best to bring your panels out of the weather during these conditions.
Can I upgrade my solar system?
Redarc solar modules are designed to be upgradable and expandable. All Redarc panels, thin film, portable or fixed, are designed to be interconnected regardless of their type. There is also adaptor plugs available should you wish to add Redarc solar modules to an existing non-Redarc solar setup.
For a full list of FAQs, including typical usage calculations, visit www.redarc.com.au/solar.
How do I connect my panel to my battery?
Your solar panels should always be connected through a regulator and then the regulator connected to the battery/s. A regulator is required to ensure that none of the high voltages present at the output of a solar panel during good light conditions can damage the battery/s. Each panel/regulator comes with a set of instructions outlining how they should be connected to the system.
What are the most common units used for solar calculations?
Watts: The Watt is the basic unit of power. It is named after the eighteenth-century Scottish inventor James Watt. Power = Voltage x Current, so Watts = Volts x Amps.
Volts: Volts are a unit of electromotive force, measuring how much “potential” there is in an electric circuit. The higher the voltage, the more electrical current will flow in the circuit.
Amps: Amperes (or Amps), are the measure of electric current. One Amp is equal to a number of electrons passing a point in a circuit each second at a certain voltage.
Amp hours: Amp hours are a measure of stored power and represent the number of Amps drawn, for the amount of time in hours that this current is drawn. Amps x hours = AH
What's the best time of day to use my panel?
Your panels will provide the most power at peak sunlight, which occurs in the middle of the day when there is no cloud cover. As long as the sun is out, your panels will continue to provide power at a reduced rate before and after this peak sunlight period.
Where do I place my panel with regards to the sun?
Ideally your solar panel should be in direct sunlight for best performance. As much as possible your solar panel should be perpendicular to the direction of the sun’s rays. In practice this is not always easily achievable or convenient and so Redarc recommend that you orient your panels so that they are facing north at about a 45° angle.
Will my panel work when it's cloudy?
Solar panels do generate electricity in cloudy weather although their output is diminished. The output can drop to as low as 10% of the full sun intensity. The use of an MPPT regulator will help get the most out of your panels during these conditions.
