MIDDLE EAST

The Middle East is where ancient history meets rapid modern development, and where off roading is more than a hobby, it’s a way of life. Skilled local 4x4 communities have refined desert driving into its own discipline, with weekend convoys, night drives and desert camping embedded in the culture.

Home to some of the world’s most dramatic sand deserts - from fine powder requiring precise momentum control to firm, wind-packed ridgelines built for technical cresting - it was the perfect setting for the ARB 50-Year Trip Challenge!

With friends of ARB (dealers and distributors) joining from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Kuwait, and India, we were ready to take on the terrain.

THE TRIP

ARB EMIRATES SHOWROOM → DOWNTOWN DUBAI → LUCA CAMEL FARM

The journey began in Dubai, UAE, cruising through the modern downtown skyline before leaving the city for the desert via Al Qudra Lakes, a wildlife haven home to over 170 bird species and native desert animals, and a popular escape for locals.

We set up camp at Luca Camel Farm, enjoying traditional dishes like lamb with rice, Shish Taouk, shawarma and khubz, and even took on a camel ride, almost as bumpy as the dunes.

ARB Tip: From here, you’re heading toward Rub’ al Khali, the world’s largest continuous sand desert. Pack the essentials - plenty of water, snacks, recovery gear and a satellite phone.

DAY 2: LUCA CAMEL FARM → LIWA FESTIVAL ABU DHABI

After an early start, we travelled 450km to the Liwa International Festival in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, a 23-day winter celebration of Emirati culture, motorsport and desert adventure. Each year, the 4x4 community gathers at Tal Moreeb (Moreeb Dune) to push their vehicles to the limit in two distinct ways: dune racing, a timed competition where drivers follow a defined route and style in the fastest possible time, and dune riding, a more free-flowing approach focused on technical skill, control and momentum across the dunes.

Arriving in Liwa by afternoon, we were welcomed by towering dunes and an electric atmosphere. After setting up camp, we rested up ahead of the grand finale - tackling the Liwa dunes ourselves.

ARB Tip: Wander through the Liwa camps at night to experience the music, food and entertainment.

DAY 3: LIWA FESTIVAL ABU DHABI

Day three was dedicated to pure off roading. After fuelling up with Noor’s hearty stewed fava beans, we headed straight for the towering 300-metre Tal Moreeb dune, a raw, dramatic landscape built for adventure.

From high-powered dune climbs and intense motorsport moments to showcasing capable touring setups, the day was charged with adrenaline and shared passion. The arrival of the ARB Earth Camper turned heads, quickly becoming a standout display of true desert-ready overlanding in extreme conditions.

Beyond the vehicles, Liwa’s culture and community shone through, with traditional displays and warm hospitality bringing everyone together. By evening, it was time to say our goodbyes until the next adventure.
